Sitka Marriage License Applications

Sitka is one of the few Alaska communities where the municipal clerk also issues marriage licenses locally. The Sitka Municipal Clerk is at 100 Lincoln Street, Sitka, AK 99835. Phone: (907) 747-1811. The clerk issues licenses for a fee of $60, the same as the state courts. You can also apply at the Sitka Superior Court at 304 Lake Street, Sitka, AK 99835. Phone: (907) 747-3291. Both parties must appear in person at the same time, under AS 25.05.021.

There is a three-day waiting period after you apply before the license is valid. The license is good for 90 days. Alaska does not have common law marriage, so a license is required for all couples. After the ceremony, the officiant returns the completed license to the issuing court or clerk. The record then goes to HAVRS for state recording. Give it three to four weeks before ordering a certified copy. Under AS 25.05.171, officiants must return licenses promptly, but delays can happen. If you don't see the record after several weeks, call HAVRS or the court to check the status.

The Alaska Court System directory includes the Sitka Superior Court at 304 Lake Street, one of two places in Sitka where marriage licenses can be obtained.

Sitka Historical Marriage Records

Sitka has some of the oldest marriage records in Alaska. The Sitka Birth, Marriage, and Death Records collection covers 1817 to 1960. The Sitka Marriage Records collection covers 1816 to 1933. These collections exist because Sitka was the center of Russian Alaska before the 1867 purchase and then became Alaska's territorial capital until 1906. That long period of settled government meant more consistent record-keeping than most of Alaska. The Alaska State Archives in Juneau holds many of these documents.

The Alaska State Archives finding aids at archives.alaska.gov describe what Sitka-related collections are available and how to access them. The genealogy page at archives.alaska.gov gives broader context for historical vital records research across the state. FamilySearch at familysearch.org has indexed many Sitka records online for free searching. The Daily Sitka Sentinel, which has been published since 1940, is also a historical reference for marriage announcements and community records.

For records since 1913, the state HAVRS system is the official source. For earlier records, the archives and FamilySearch are your best starting points. Records 50 or more years old are now public, meaning most Sitka records from the 1960s and earlier are accessible to anyone under AS 25.05.301.

The Alaska State Archives collection guides describe historical Sitka records including early marriage collections going back to the 1800s.
