How to Get Dillingham Census Area Marriage Records

The Dillingham Census Area is part of the Unorganized Borough, which means there is no local borough government that keeps vital records. All marriage records are held by the Alaska Bureau of Vital Statistics (HAVRS). Whether the marriage happened in Dillingham, Goodnews Bay, Clark's Point, or any other community in the census area, the state is where you go for certified copies. You can visit either of the two walk-in offices, request by mail, fax, or order online.

The Juneau office is at 5441 Commercial Blvd., Juneau, AK 99801, phone (907) 465-3391. The Anchorage office is at 3901 Old Seward Hwy, Suite 101, Anchorage, AK 99503, phone (907) 269-0991. Both are open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mail requests go to Health Analytics and Vital Records, P.O. Box 110675, Juneau, AK 99811-0675. Fax: (907) 465-3618.

The fastest option is VitalChek, the state's only approved online ordering vendor. VitalChek orders take about three to four weeks. Regular mail orders take two to three months. Every request needs a signed copy of a valid photo ID, full names of both parties, the year of the marriage, and the location. Records under 50 years old are restricted to the named parties and their legal representatives. Records 50 years or older are open to the public. The fee is $30 for the first copy and $25 for each additional copy ordered at the same time.

Note: Use only one submission method per request. Sending the same request by multiple channels results in a charge for each submission. Pick mail, fax, in-person, or VitalChek and use that one channel for your request.

Marriage Licenses in Dillingham Census Area

The Dillingham Court at 304 Main Street, Dillingham, AK 99576, phone (907) 842-5215, handles marriage license applications and marriage commissioner appointments for the census area. Both parties can apply at this court or at the Juneau or Anchorage Vital Records offices. For communities outside Dillingham proper, applying by mail to the Vital Records office or traveling to Dillingham for the application are the main options. The fee is $60 in person or $70.50 by mail.

Both parties must sign the application in front of a notary, licensing officer, postmaster, or court official. Government-issued photo IDs are required for both applicants. After the completed application is received, the three-day waiting period begins. The license is then valid for 90 days. Alaska does not recognize common law marriage, so the license is always required before a ceremony. Both parties must be physically present at the ceremony. Proxy marriages are not permitted in Alaska.

Under AS 25.05.021, marriages are void if either party has a living spouse or if the parties are related closer than the fourth degree of consanguinity. Under AS 25.05.171, the minimum age to marry without parental consent is 18. Persons 16 or 17 need a court order and parental consent in writing. No one under 16 may marry in Alaska.

The Dillingham Court can issue marriage commissioner appointments under AS 25.05.081 for ceremonies in the census area. The appointee must be at least 18 and does not need to be an Alaska resident. The court needs the names of both parties, the ceremony date and location, and the name and address of the intended commissioner. There is a $25 fee. The commissioner must receive the written appointment order from the court before performing the ceremony.

After the ceremony, the signed license must be returned to a state Vital Records office within seven days. Once registered, you can order the Certificate of Marriage for $30. This certificate is the official proof of marriage that you use for name changes, insurance updates, and legal purposes.

Note: If either party was previously married and the divorce happened less than 60 days before the new application, you must provide a copy of the divorce decree or dissolution order with your application.

Historical Dillingham Area Marriage Records

The Dillingham Census Area has a rich Alaska Native heritage with deep Yup'ik roots. Formal civil record-keeping started in the region with territorial registration in January 1913, though compliance in remote southwestern Alaska took time to become consistent. Marriages in the region before civil registration were often recorded through church records, particularly from the Russian Orthodox and Moravian missions that were active in the area.

One of the notable historical collections for this area is the Goodnews Bay Marriage Records covering 1939 through 1948. Goodnews Bay is a community on the coast of the census area, and these records represent a nine-year window of documented marriages in that community. These records are part of the Alaska State Archives collections and are available through FamilySearch at FamilySearch.org. The Alaska State Archives partnership with FamilySearch has digitized over 1.1 million documents, making many historical Alaska records available online at no cost.

The Alaska State Archives in Juneau holds the original territorial records for the Dillingham area. For records not yet digitized, or for research that requires the original documents, contact the Archives at archives.alaska.gov. Marriage license applications from the territorial period are generally open to the public even within the 50-year window that restricts marriage certificates. This means researchers can often access application data without the same restrictions that apply to the certificates themselves.

For records from 1913 onward that fall within the 50-year confidentiality period, only the named parties or their legal representatives can obtain certified copies. Records from before 1976 are now all 50 or more years old and are open to any researcher. As each year passes, more recent records become public, which is worth keeping in mind for ongoing genealogy research.
