How to Get Bethel Marriage Records

Certified copies of Bethel marriage records come from the Alaska Health Analytics and Vital Records Section, known as HAVRS. Because Bethel is a remote community, most residents use mail or the online service rather than visiting in person. The nearest HAVRS office with walk-in service is in Anchorage: 3901 Old Seward Hwy Ste 101, Anchorage, AK 99503, phone (907) 269-0991. The Juneau office is at 5441 Commercial Blvd, Juneau, AK 99801, phone (907) 465-3391. Both are open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Online orders go through VitalChek, the authorized ordering service for Alaska. Expedited orders take about three to four weeks. Mail requests go directly to HAVRS. The HAVRS vital records page has current order forms, fees, and the list of who is eligible to request a certified copy. The first certified copy is $30. Additional copies of the same record ordered at the same time cost $25 each.

Alaska marriage records are restricted for 50 years. After that, they are public. Records within the 50-year window are available only to the parties named in the record, close family, or authorized legal representatives. Bethel residents should plan for longer processing times due to remote logistics when mailing requests.

Bethel Court and Marriage Licenses

Marriage licenses in Bethel are issued at the Bethel Court, located at 204 State Highway, Bethel, AK 99559. Phone: (907) 543-3150. Both people who plan to marry must appear together in person to apply. Bring valid government-issued photo ID for each applicant. Court staff process the application and collect the license fee on the spot.

After you apply, Alaska law requires a three-day waiting period before the license can be used. Under AS 25.05.261, the license is valid for 90 days from the date it was issued. If your ceremony does not happen within that 90-day window, the license expires and you must apply again. The in-person fee is $60. If you submit a mailed application, the fee is $70.50.

The Bethel Court is part of Alaska's Fourth Judicial District. The Alaska Court System directory has the full listing for the Bethel Court, including hours and contact information. Court staff can help you with the application process but cannot give legal advice.

The Bethel region has some of the richest historical record collections in rural Alaska, thanks to early missionary activity and federal administration in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. The Alaska State Archives holds several collections accessible through FamilySearch. These include Bethel Precinct Marriage Records covering 1916 to 1995, which is an unusually long span for a rural Alaska collection. Additional collections include Bethel Miscellaneous Records from 1912 to 1913 and Kuskokwim Births, Marriages, and Deaths from 1902 to 1974.

These digitized records can be searched and viewed at no cost through FamilySearch. For anyone researching Yup'ik family history or early settlers in the Bethel area, these collections are a strong starting point. The Alaska State Archives in Juneau holds original documents and additional materials not yet digitized. Their collection guides at archives.alaska.gov can help you identify what exists for a specific time period or community.

Note: Church mission records from the Bethel area, particularly from the Moravian Church which had a long presence here, may hold additional marriage data not in government collections.

Alaska Marriage Requirements in Bethel

The rules for getting married in Bethel are the same as anywhere else in Alaska. Both people must be at least 16 years old. Those between 16 and 17 need written consent from a parent or guardian. Under AS 25.05.171, these age rules apply statewide. There is no Alaska residency requirement, so out-of-state visitors can apply for a Bethel marriage license.

Some marriages are barred by law. AS 25.05.021 prohibits marriages between close relatives. Alaska does not recognize common law marriage. No matter how long two people have lived together in Bethel, they are not legally married without completing the formal license and ceremony process. Couples who formed a common law marriage in a state that recognizes such arrangements should speak with a lawyer about how Alaska treats those relationships.

AS 25.05.301 requires the person who performs the marriage ceremony to return the signed certificate to the Bureau of Vital Statistics after the ceremony. This step is how the record enters the state system. Without that return, getting a certified copy later becomes difficult. Make sure your officiant understands this responsibility before your ceremony date.
