How to Get Copper River Marriage Records

The Copper River Census Area is part of the Unorganized Borough, so there is no local borough office that keeps vital records. All marriage records for this region are held by the Alaska Bureau of Vital Statistics (HAVRS). You can order certified copies in person at the Juneau or Anchorage state offices, by mail, by fax, or online through VitalChek. For residents in Glennallen or other Copper River communities, the Anchorage office is generally the more convenient in-person option.

The Anchorage vital records office is at 3901 Old Seward Hwy, Suite 101, Anchorage, AK 99503, phone (907) 269-0991. The Juneau office is at 5441 Commercial Blvd., Juneau, AK 99801, phone (907) 465-3391. Both are open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mail requests go to Health Analytics and Vital Records, P.O. Box 110675, Juneau, AK 99811-0675. Fax requests go to (907) 465-3618.

Online orders through VitalChek are the fastest option, taking about three to four weeks. Regular mail can take two to three months. Every request requires a signed copy of a government-issued photo ID, the full names of both parties, the year of the marriage, and the location. Records under 50 years old are restricted to the named parties and their legal representatives. Records 50 years or older are public. The fee is $30 for the first copy and $25 for each additional copy ordered at the same time.

Note: All requests must use only one submission method. Submitting the same request by both mail and fax results in charges for both. Use only one method per request.

Marriage Licenses in Copper River Census Area

The Glennallen Court at Mile 188 Glenn Highway, Glennallen, AK 99588, phone (907) 822-3405, serves the Copper River Census Area for marriage licenses and marriage commissioner appointments. Both parties can apply at the Glennallen Court, at the Juneau or Anchorage Vital Records offices, or by mail. The application fee is $60 in person or $70.50 by mail. Both parties must sign the application in front of a notary, licensing officer, postmaster, or court official.

After the completed application is received, the three-day waiting period begins before the license can be issued. The license is then valid for 90 days. If the ceremony doesn't happen within that window, the license expires and a new application and fee are required. There is no blood test requirement. Both parties need a valid government-issued photo ID. Alaska does not allow common law marriage, so the license is always required. Both parties must be physically present at the ceremony.

Under AS 25.05.021, marriages are prohibited if either party has a living spouse or if the parties are more closely related than the fourth degree of consanguinity. Under AS 25.05.171, both parties must be at least 18 to apply without parental consent. Persons 16 or 17 need a court order and parental consent. No one under 16 may marry in Alaska.

After the ceremony, the signed license must be returned to a state Vital Records office within seven days. Once the state registers the marriage, you can order the Certificate of Marriage for $30. This is the document you use for legal name changes, insurance, and other purposes. Keep in mind: the license is the legal authorization to marry, while the certificate is proof that the marriage took place and was registered with the state.

If you want a friend or family member to perform your ceremony, the Glennallen Court can issue a marriage commissioner appointment under AS 25.05.081. The appointee must be at least 18 years old, does not have to be an Alaska resident, and must have the written appointment order in hand before the ceremony. The fee is $25 for processing the appointment.

Historical Copper River Region Marriage Records

The Copper River Census Area was established in 2019, but marriage records from the communities in this region go back over a century. Some of the key historical collections include Chitina Birth, Marriage, and Death Certificates covering 1915 through 1969, and Copper Center Marriage Records spanning two periods: 1913-1915 and 1949-1965. These records document marriages in the Copper River interior during the territorial and early statehood periods.

These historical records are available through the Alaska State Archives and can be accessed via FamilySearch's Alaska Vital Records collection at FamilySearch.org. The FamilySearch collection covers Alaska vital records from 1816 through 1959. The Alaska State Archives in Juneau holds the originals and has digitized over 1.1 million documents in partnership with FamilySearch. For records that haven't been digitized yet, or for records you can't find in the online collection, contact the Archives directly at archives.alaska.gov.

Territorial registration of marriages in Alaska started in January 1913. Before that date, church records are the primary source for marriages in the Copper River region. Copper Center was an important early community in the area, and records from that period reflect the mix of Alaska Native residents and early settlers in the region. The gap in Copper Center Marriage Records between 1915 and 1949 suggests incomplete registration during those middle years, which is typical for remote interior Alaska communities.

Note: When searching for records from the Copper River Census Area, remember that before 2019 these records were filed under the Valdez-Cordova Census Area. Historical databases and finding aids may still use that older designation. Search under both names to be thorough.
