Getting Denali Borough Marriage Records

Denali Borough, like all Alaska boroughs, does not maintain its own vital records. The Alaska Bureau of Vital Statistics (HAVRS) holds all marriage records for the borough. Whether the marriage took place in Healy, Cantwell, Anderson, McKinley Park, or Ferry, the certified copy comes from the state. The two walk-in offices where you can request records in person are in Juneau and Anchorage. For Denali Borough residents, Anchorage is typically more accessible.

The Anchorage office is at 3901 Old Seward Hwy, Suite 101, Anchorage, AK 99503, phone (907) 269-0991. The Juneau office is at 5441 Commercial Blvd., Juneau, AK 99801, phone (907) 465-3391. Both are open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You can also submit by mail to Health Analytics and Vital Records, P.O. Box 110675, Juneau, AK 99811-0675, or fax to (907) 465-3618.

Online orders through VitalChek process in about three to four weeks, which is faster than regular mail. Every request must include a signed copy of a government-issued photo ID, the full names of both parties, the year of the marriage, and the location. Records less than 50 years old are restricted to the named parties and their legal representatives. Records 50 years or older are public. The fee is $30 for the first certified copy and $25 for each additional copy of the same record ordered at the same time.

Note: Submit only one request at a time using one method. If you send the same request by both mail and fax, you will be charged for both. Pick one method and stick with it.

Denali Borough Marriage License Process

The Healy Court at Mile 1 Usibelli Spur Road, Healy, AK 99743, phone (907) 683-2271, handles marriage license applications and marriage commissioner appointments for Denali Borough residents. Both parties can apply at this court, at the Anchorage or Juneau Vital Records offices, or by mail. The application fee is $60 in person or $70.50 by mail. Both parties must sign the application in front of a notary, court official, or postmaster.

After the completed application is received, there is a three-day waiting period before the license can be issued. The license is then valid for 90 days. If the ceremony doesn't happen within that period, the license becomes void and a new application is required. No blood test is needed. Both parties need a valid government-issued photo ID. Alaska does not recognize common law marriage, so a license is always required before the ceremony.

Under AS 25.05.021, marriages are void if either party has a living spouse or if the parties are related closer than the fourth degree of consanguinity. Under AS 25.05.171, both parties must be at least 18 to apply without parental consent. Persons 16 or 17 need a court order and parental consent. No one under 16 may marry in Alaska.

For marriage commissioner appointments, the Healy Court can appoint a friend or relative to perform your ceremony under AS 25.05.081. The person must be at least 18 years old and does not need to be an Alaska resident. The court needs the appointee's full name and address, the names of the couple, the ceremony date, and the ceremony location. The fee is $25 for processing. The commissioner must have the written appointment order before the ceremony. If the date changes, a new order is required.

After the ceremony, the signed license must be returned to a state Vital Records office within seven days. Once registered, you can order the Certificate of Marriage for $30. This is the official proof of marriage that you use for name changes, insurance updates, and legal purposes. Keep your Certificate of Marriage in a safe place along with other important documents.

The Alaska Court System directory lists the Healy Court location and phone number for Denali Borough residents needing marriage license services or marriage commissioner appointments.

Historical Marriage Records in Denali Borough

Denali Borough was not created until 1990, but the communities within its boundaries have older recorded histories. The Mt. McKinley Birth, Marriage, and Death Records collection at FamilySearch covers 1911 through 1957. This is one of the key historical collections for the interior Alaska region that now makes up Denali Borough. These records reflect marriages and vital events from the early days of the Kantishna mining district, the railroad construction era, and the establishment of what would become Denali National Park.

These records are available through the Alaska State Archives and FamilySearch partnership. The Alaska Vital Records collection at FamilySearch.org covers births, marriages, and deaths from 1816 to 1959. The Western States Marriage Index at FamilySearch also includes Alaska marriages from 1809 through 2011 and can serve as a useful index for confirming dates and names. For records after 1959, the state vital records system holds certified copies.

The Alaska State Archives in Juneau is the original custodian of the territorial records that were later digitized. Researchers who need records not yet in the online collections can contact the Archives at archives.alaska.gov. Marriage license applications are generally open to the public under Alaska law, which means even applications from within the 50-year restriction window can often be accessed for research purposes.

Note: Territorial records from the Mt. McKinley area were kept by precinct and territorial court officials before statehood. Some records from small communities in the current Denali Borough area may be filed under earlier precinct names rather than current community names, so it helps to search broadly when using historical indexes.
